dc.description.abstractThis thesis examines WTO’s central role in resolving trade disputes, considering the US-China trade war as the most recent example, revealing the difficulties and the urgent necessity for an overhaul of the WTO to maintain its efficiency in the present-day global trade situation. The WTO started as the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) in the wake of the Second World War and was later institutionalized in 1995. It has thus been the backbone of healthy trade relations between nations. Nevertheless, the constant trade war between the US and China undermines the WTO's dispute resolution mechanism and its ability to adapt to changes in global trade. The thesis will critically assess the WTO's role in resolving those problems by analysing the evolution of GATT into WTO, past trade conflicts and case study of the US-China trade war.
