The overwintering life stages of mosquitoes can differ by species depending upon the specific environmental cues. This paper summarises the knowledge about different overwintering strategies of Hungarian mosquito species, based on former studies and the authors’ own new results. As new results, the current researches show that not only the females, but adult males of Culex pipiens pipiens are able to overwinter; and the individuals of Aedes geniculatus are able to survive the winter in the larval stage. Besides, the invasive Aedes japonicus japonicus – which has recently become established in Hungary – overwinters in the egg stage. The following types of overwintering strategies were recognised in the Hungarian mosquito fauna: eggs (23 species), eggs and larvae (2), larvae (5), larvae and female adults (5), female adults (14), male and female adults (2) and continued reproduction without diapause (1 taxon, Culex pipiens biotype molestus which mates and deposits its eggs in water sources below the ground). In the case of an invasive species (Aedes albopictus) there is no evidence of its survival in cold winter temperatures and in the case of other invasive species (Aedes koreicus), further research are required to clarify its overwintering strategy.hu_HU
