The formation of lip cancer, metastasis, their likelihood and outcomes were reviewed in relation to the development of the lips, their structures and functions. Specific analysis of contributing factors revealed that lip cancers are mostly squamous cell carcinoma type, found on the lower lip and are more frequent in men, age over 50, fair skinned, chronically sun exposed, tobacco and alcohol users. Earlier diagnosis and treatment have a more optimal prognosis. The treatment of lesions is best by combining surgical removal and radiotherapy, immediate reconstruction, as well as elective neck surgeries with advanced stage tumors. An analysis based on the most recently gathered epidemiological data indicated the continuing health burden of lip cancers and predicts a further increase in the coming decades, that can only be combated by advancing knowledge for preventive measures, prompt diagnosis and competent reconstructive treatment plans.
