Xerostomia or –“dry mouth syndrome”- is a subjective perception of dryness of the mouth with various etiological factors. It’s found as a consequent of systemic or local factors rather than being separated clinical entity. It is a common condition with high prevalence in women and geriatric patients. Pathologically it is divided into ‘true xerostomia (xerostomia vera, primaria)’ and ‘symptomatic xerostomia (xerostomia spura, symptomatica)’.
