| dc.description.abstract | We measured and analyzed the antimicrobial peptide levels in patients with atopic dermatitis by taking skin punch biopsies and using immunohistochemical staining. These levels were compared and contrasted to the levels of antimicrobial peptides in Psoriasis as well as in healthy controls. The purpose of this investigation was to clear up controversies as there are many published papers on this topic with contradicting results. Our results showed that the antimicrobial peptides are generally elevated or unchanged in atopic dermatitis with the exception of one, LL-37, which was found to be down regulated. This finding can have significant clinical implications as it provides clinicians with a deeper understanding of the initial pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis. | |
