Protein-rich feeds are the most expensive components of the diets that are not available in sufficient quantities in the countries of the European Union. Because only 70-80% of the protein content of feed is absorbed from the digestive tract and the utilization of the absorbed fraction is even less than the digestibility, a significant proportion of the feed protein consumed by farm animals is excreted via urine and faeces. Due to this, animal production is estimated to account for 80-90% of ammonia emissions in the European Union. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of multiphase feeding on the production parameters and N excretion of pigs. Based on our results, the application of multi-phase feeding, without deterioration of production parameters, has a positive effect on the N-retention of pigs and thus reduces the rate of N-excretion and ammonia emission. Although the use of multi-phase feeding can generate additional transportation costs, due to the reduction in feed costs, it can even improve the profitability of production.
