Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Gender Differences in the Compliment Response Strategies of Hungarian Secondary School Students(2013-05-02T08:57:54Z) Varga, Kitti; Koczogh, Helga Vanda; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarThe structure of my thesis is as follows. After the Introduction, in Chapter Two, I will present some theories, such as Speech Act Theory in Chapter 1.1 and some politeness theories in Chapter 1.3 that will give background information for further discussion. Also, in the Literature Review part of my thesis, I will provide definitions (Chapter 2.1) and functions (Chapter 2.2) of compliments and I will also cover some previous research, dealing with gender differences in complimenting behaviour. After that, I will turn to compliment responses, which are the main focus area of my thesis. I will present some definitions, characteristics and categories of these speech acts. In Chapter 3.3, I will present four taxonomies provided for compliment responses. In Chapter 3.4, I will also give an overview of some previous studies, dealing with gender-based differences in compliment responses. In the second part of my thesis, I will attempt to add empirical evidence to what I have found in the literature review. First, I will present the data as well as the methodology I applied in my research. I will also demonstrate my research findings, comparing and contrasting them with those of previous studies, and I will try to answer my research questions listed above. Finally, I will make a conclusion as well as will give some suggestions for further research.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Gender Differences in the Use of the Discourse Marker 'You Know' in Same-Sex and Mixed-Sex Interviews(2013-05-02T08:57:04Z) Szűcs, Noémi; Koczogh, Helga Vanda; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarIn my diploma work, I investigate gender differences in the use of the discourse marker you know. Although many studies (e.g., Fraser, 1990; Furkó, 2007; Jucker, 1993; Schiffrin, 1987) can be found on DMs in general, only a few of them (Dines, 1980; Koczogh & Furkó, 2011) take into consideration the gender differences that exist between men and women’s uses of DMs. Thus, because of the scarcity of this kind of studies, I found it interesting to deal with this topic.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Sexism in the English Language(2013-05-02T08:58:11Z) Sebestyén, Fanni; Koczogh, Helga Vanda; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarThe aim of my thesis is to demonstrate why the English language is considered to be sexist; what are the sexist features of the language and why, and how the English language has been changing in order to eliminate its sexist features and be more politically correct.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető A Study of English Discourse Markers(2013-10-11T08:24:10Z) Koczogh, Helga Vanda; Furkó, Péter; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarMy diploma work consists of two parts: a theoretical and an empirical one. After the introductory section I will give an overview on the names, definitions and subclassification of DMs, all of which are subject of debate among scholars even today. Then in Chapter Two, my primary objective will be to identify and discuss the not less diverse semantic, stylistic, and syntactic features of DM. I use some of these as criteria for determining DM status. The focus in Chapter Three will be on the NS – NNS differences regarding DM use. After presenting the main differences and the influencing factors, I will attempt to find the reasons for them. In Chapter Four I will turn to the previous studies on the DM well and I will give a short overview of these focusing on the meanings and functions attributed to it. Here I will draw the attention to the problems of categorization. In the second part of my diploma work I will add empirical evidence to the theories explored in the first part. I will describe the data I used for my research as well as the methodology I applied. Then, I will present my findings and with the help of these I will reflect on my corpus and I will compare it to previous research carried out by prominent linguists of the past.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Supportive Function of Interruption and Simultaneous Speech in Same- and Cross-sex Conversations(2013-05-02T08:57:41Z) Németh, Zsófia; Koczogh, Helga Vanda; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarInteraction between people is vital. Information, ideas and thoughts are passed through the channel of communication that involves all the interactions between people. The most common parts of interaction are the phenomena of interruption and simultaneous speech. According to the unwritten rule that only one person can appropriately speak at the same time, interruption and simultaneous speech violate the current speaker's right to the turn. However, what happens when interruption takes place but there is no intention to turn-taking action at all? Interruptions and simultaneous speech can also be triggered by the interrupter’s enthusiasm or active involvement in the discourse to express rapport or cooperation.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető The Effects of Gender and Social Distance on the Expression of Verbal Disagreement Employed by Hungarian Undergraduate StudentsKoczogh, Helga Vanda; Furkó, Bálint Péter; Nyelvtudományok doktori iskola; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi Kar -- Angol Nyelvészeti TanszékAz értekezés fő célja a mindennapi interakciókban megjelenő verbális egyet nem értés szociopragmatikai vizsgálata a Debreceni Egyetem hallgatóinak körében. The aim of this dissertation is threefold: (1) to examine verbal disagreement as it is accomplished linguistically in the mixed-sex conversations of Hungarian undergraduate students, (2) to map the functional spectrum of disagreements occurring in the data, and (3) to determine the effects of the variables of gender and social distance on the expression of verbal disagreement. The author identifies several disagreement strategies, pre-sequences and pragmatic force modifiers that are employed by Hungarian undergraduates to convey disagreement. The author argues that both gender and social distance have a vital impact on the rate of disagreements as well as the linguistic expression of opposition.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető The Representation of Power and Dominance in Conversations(2013-05-02T08:57:19Z) Offra, Erzsébet; Koczogh, Helga Vanda; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarPower and dominance actions appear in everyday conversation among different (for example professor and student) as well as equal social status persons (for example two students). High- and low-ranked individuals speak differently using different conversational strategies.
