Absztrakt

In my opinion, the internet can open the doors to a magical world, which makes it possible for all of us to improve our knowledge, find new interests, get to know other people from all over the world, or just have a good time. But in order to feel self-confident in this new environment, it is essential to understand and speak its unique language. It is a fact that the language of the internet is English. But during the last decade a tremendous amount of new words and expressions have appeared due to the technological improvement. The more information was available on the World Wide Web, the faster it was streaming, speeding up the communication as well. The pioneer of this change was the young generation, who, being acquainted with and using the new technologies, created their own way of online talking. As a natural behaviour in their age they wanted to be different than their parents and teachers in their language as well. Due to the emergence of chat room discussions or text messaging their virtual life became just as important as their “real” one, so they started to adapt their slang into their fast online communication. It is hard for the older generation to decode this “netspeak”, especially for those, who do not speak English. The fundamental aim of this dissertation is to help people understand this language, by assigning the Hungarian equivalents of a various range of English slang expressions used in online communication. Besides, I try to give an insight into some of the main problems occurred while translating this kind of slang. My main goal is to be able to contribute to closing the gap between the “digital natives” and the “old” generation.
