In this paper, besides analysing the so called “Bridget Jones phenomenon”, I will focus on the main subcultural components of Bridget’s life, who “is a kind of ‘everywoman’ of the 1990s” (Whelehan 12). I am also going to touch upon the obsessive habitus of her that is mainly represented in the singleness, language usage, distorted body image and the influential power of media. My reason for choosing this topic for further discussion is within the dichotomy of “subcultural Bridget”. She is both unique and stereotypical as she deviates from the normative ideals of the adult communities, but also acts like most women in the 20th century. I am going to recline upon the text and the secondary readings contributing to the topic with not taking the film adaptation into consideration, as it gives me the chance to observe everything through Bridget’s point of view.
