Gaze and 'surveillance' are deeply rooted inthe structure of Villette. In my thesis, I will examine how the gaze and ‘surveillance’ of M. Beck and M. Paul controls Lucy Snowe, how her attitude towards the authoritative gaze and the desiring one is represented, and in addition I will explore if there is a way out from the inspection of her or not.
