In the course of the analysis of a novel, one may focus among many other issues on characterization. Characters are essential elements in a novel, through their dialogues and actions the story gets its vivacity and dynamics. This essay will focus on Jane Austen’s two novels Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. Although these novels are generally associated with the wit with which they give a portrayal of nineteenth-century British society, the versatility of the characters they provide also contribute to their unceasing popularity. From the characters appearing in the novel, special attention will be paid to the two central sister-pairs, namely Elizabeth and Jane Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Elinor and Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility.
