Even if the term 'corpus linguistics' is relatively new, the use of collections of text in language study started a long time ago. In the Middle Ages some linguists began to make lists of all the words in particular texts, together with their contexts. Today this process is called concordancing. Other scholars counted word frequencies from single texts or from collections of texts and made lists of the most frequently-used words. (Introduction)
