I want to start by evoking a scene of recognition from the novel. This is the scene in which Inspector Pazzi intuitively recognizes “Dr Fell” as the wanted criminal Hannibal Lecter. This recognition or revelation of the true identity of Lecter is very carefully placed by the novel. Its setting and background is a gruesome exhibition which suggests many things not only about Lecter but also about his function in both the novel and the film.
