My thesis discusses the appearance of the issue of slavery in the American movies. At the end of the 20th-century in the American movie industry a general interest emerged towards slave narratives. Many directors considered it worthy to screen these stories, and they made an effort to depict the institution of slavery in a historically authentic way. These late 20th- century movies emphasized the cruel and unjust treatment of black people in the United States of America in a revolutionary way. In the present American society racial discrimination and other offensive behaviors towards African-Americans still exist, going against the liberal ideas which define the present political and social atmosphere of America. Thus the problem of slavery became again really popular also in the film industry and in 2013 and 2016 directors released movies and series which elaborated on the same slave narratives as their 20th-century counterparts. In this fashion in my thesis I examine the parallels between the movies The Birth of a Nation(2016), 12 Years a Slave(2013) and the miniseries Roots(2016); and their 20th-century predecessors The Birth of a Nation(1915), Solomon Northup’s Odyssey(1984), and the Roots(1977).
