Potential inhibitory effects of microcystin-LR on cyst maturation of the model green alga Haematococcus lacustris
Corrales, Marycruz; Bácsi, István; DE--Természettudományi és Technológiai Kar--Biológiai és Ökológiai Intézet
Despite the fact, that microcistyns belongs to the most often studied cyanobacterial metabolites, there are relatively little knowledge about their effects on the natural "neighborhood" of cyanobacteria: other algae. The lack of knowledge is especially true regarding those algae, which can be characterized serious life cycle changes due to certain environmental conditions. Among the freshwater green algae, H. lacustris is the best known cyst forming species, because this species has been considered as one of the most important natural sources of astaxanthin under stressful environmental conditions. Astaxanthin has a significant economic value within different industries, therefore there are a lot of studies focused on the optimization of astaxanthin production. Previous studies have shown that a lot of stressful conditions may increase the rate of astaxanthin production. Moreover, it was demonstrated that different cell types are formed during the life cycle of H. lacustris according to the surrounding conditions and growth stage. Because of these, H. lacustris is an excellent model organism for studying cyst formation under different environmental stress conditions. The main aim of this thesis work was to study the growth, life cycle and cysts formation of H. lacustris under the presence of a cyanotoxin, MC-LR, to evaluate physiological changes. The results showed that vegetative cell number was lower in MC-LR treated cultures, in contrast, cyst number changes suggest the induction of encystment, seemingly proving our hypothesis. Evaluating the results of cell type proportion changes, our hypothesis was only partially proved: Indeed, the proportion of flagellated vegetative cells decreased, as a result palmella cells appeared so cyst formation was induced. However, the maturation of palmella did not continue, i.e. the accumulation of red pigment did not differed from control and was significantly lower than in induced culture. This shows that H. lacustris cells tried to adapt according to the surrounding environment and cyst formation was induced as its defense mechanism to survive under extreme conditions. However, the maturation of the formed palmella cells (accumulation of red pigments) missed. These preliminary results suggest that MC-LR could have a long adverse effect on the diversity of algal communities, but there are necessary more detailed studies to analyze this phenomenon.

Enhancing encapsulation efficiency and in vitro dissolution of sodium alginate based delivery system carrying fosfomycin
Cullhaj, Emanuela; Nemes, Daniel; DE--Természettudományi és Technológiai Kar--Kémiai Intézet
The current research examines the behavior of sodium alginate microbeads loaded with fosfomycin by manipulating several parameters, which are characterized for the goal of assessing bioavailability. A regulated encapsulation approach is utilised to enable further absorption tests in the gastric and intestinal fluids, as well as enhance the dissolution rate, hence improving the overall efficiency of the procedure. The present study investigates the behaviour of sodium alginate beads loaded with fosfomycin by encapsulation using a controlled polymerization approach. This is achieved by altering various parameters to optimise the encapsulation process. This study aims to optimise the operational parameters of encapsulation systems, such as the polymer concentration, polymer solubility in the solvent, and rate of solvent removal, to enhance their efficiency.

Events of fires might have many different origins and consequences. In Brazil, they can have a particular difficult level of monitoring considering the extensive area of the country and lack of publicly available data specially for remote regions. By the use of remotely sensed data from satellites as well as GIS tools, this study carried out fire foci and LULC spatiotemporal analysis from 2002 to 2020/2022, providing relevant information for the State of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) in Brazil. Within the state, an emphasis was given to the Caatinga biome which is currently at risk. The information obtained from this study could support decision making regarding monitoring and management of the affected areas and highlighted and corroborated to the threat Caatinga has been facing.

Transmission and distribution of power system
Omene, David Ijeoma; Kosa, Janos Arpad; DE--Természettudományi és Technológiai Kar--Fizikai Intézet
In this research I covered some fundamental challenges in our power system sector today. Also taking a deep dive into the history of electricity generation to shed light on how electricity generation and distribution has gone and some major players that helped shape this evolution. Transformers and their efficiency as well as the types and faults and categories were touched upon, I have designed a medium voltage grid in this thesis that is capable of operating a city, village and factory. The designed electric transformer represents a significant leap forward in the quest for sustainable and efficient energy transmission. I have also implemented various switch gears such as fuses, circuit breakers, disconnectors, and relays to provide protection for the grid. Air coil was also used to reduce resistance in the planned grid. I also used a spare transformer to work independently whenever the main distribution transformer has a fault or undergoes breakdown or used during power outages. All parameters were taken into consideration while the grid was being planned such as the appropriate distribution lines to be used, in the case of the village the distribution lines are placed in air.

Maduagwu, Osinaka; Kosa, Janos; DE--Természettudományi és Technológiai Kar--Fizikai Intézet
The power sector is the backbone of any thriving economy, providing the necessary energy for industrial, commercial, and domestic activities. In Nigeria, as in many developing nations, the power sector has been marred by persistent challenges, hindering the nation's economic growth and development. This dissertation seeks to delve into the intricate workings of the 33 MVA distribution grid in Nigeria, examining its role in the broader context of the nation's power sector, and proposing strategic interventions to address the prevailing issues. Nigeria, with its rapidly growing population and expanding economy, faces a continuous struggle to meet the escalating demand for electricity. The 33 MVA distribution grid plays a pivotal role in the final stage of the power supply chain, distributing electricity to end-users across various regions. However, despite the significance of this grid, there are systemic challenges that have hampered its effectiveness. In this report we are going to have an overview of how I conducted my thesis research report with the help of my supervisor Dr János Kosa. In my research report, we divided it into five main segments of which I wrote a detailed description of each segment to give an idea of what we are working with and how it all builds up together eventually. The following are the five main segments are listed below: 1. Show the Nigerian power grids. 2. Direction of development in Nigeria. 3. Design a medium voltage grid. 4. Calculation of the grid. 5. Applied switch gears in planned system.

Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Biomolecules: Isoflavone and its Derivatives
Nana Bah, Philomina; Nagy, Lajos; DE--Természettudományi és Technológiai Kar--Kémiai Intézet
This experiment looked at the fragmentation of isoflavones and its derivatives using APCI-MS/MS. This yielded results such as the loss of common moieties CO, OH and methyl radical. The possible fragment ions detected on the spectra were also identified through a proposed fragmentation pathway. The collision energy (CE) at 50% survival yield was determined and the fragmentation stability of the analysed samples were also calculated based on CE at 50%. The technique used was valuable in identifying the possible product ions of the ionized samples and rank them based on their fragmentation stabilities.
