The purpose of my thesis is to present the characteristics of such designs in Hammer Horror productions and highlight the distinct features of some of these motion pictures in the history of British cinematography, while focusing on the features of its characters, the common themes and the zombies in the movies – as I am convinced that horror cinema, by showing our repressed or sometimes quite apparent fears, portrays the society and the psyche of a community in considerably authentic manner. The movies I looked into in greater detail are three Hammer Horror productions, each from a different decade, from a different director and each of them featuring gothic elements and zombies in some manner. I will examine themes, motifs and characteristics that make these movies a gothic narrative in greater detail and deconstruct the plot in order to understand the underlying cultural contexts and latent ideologies. I also scrutinize the distinct styles of the directors, the methods typical to their works and the national values they might reflect. By looking at the movies separately instead of grouping them within Hammer’s world I will point out the distinctive features of the movies and then apply certain factors by which I shall compare them relative to their specific tones.
