Myocardial reperfusion injury is a condition which results after a prolonged ischemia following reperfusion. This condition results mainly from increased production of reactive oxygen species which cause damage to the myocardium.Certain pathways known as the cardioprotective pathways help to protect the myocardium after ischemia-reperfusion. These pathways include the Reperfusion Injury Salvage Kinase (RISK) pathway, Survivor Activating Factor Enhancement (SAFE) pathway, Sphingosine-1 phosphate (S1P) pathway
