Based on clinical trials mesh infections after hernia repairs can be successfully treated conservatively, however, chronic persistent infections may require removal of the mesh. Even though clinical evidence on the effectiveness of the use of prophylactic antibiotics is not conclusive, it is still a recommended strategy for preventing mesh infections.
