Odontophobias, fear and their treatment in dentistry

Dental fear and anxiety are phenomenon’s that every dentist or dental practitioner might encounter, it has no age limit and can affect both genders. As it may affect the treatment the patient is getting or even the capabilities of the dentist, it is imperative that as a dentist when a patient comes in showing signs of fear and distress that you recognize it and should have an idea of how to manage their fear. Dental fear plays an import role in the evasion of visiting the dentist leading to deterioration in and oral health problems, and the patient to seek treatment for emergency driven conditions with a further elevation in the perceived notion of pain which results in further fear. It can be concluded that fear and phobia represent an ongoing cycle that continues to repeat. Fear may be due to a cluster of psychological problems that alter the individual’s life when it comes to receiving dental treatment thus, causing an increased level of incidence of caries and other oral health related conditions. Fear is composed of multi-etiological factors, both endogenous and exogenous whether, it be past traumatizing experiences, hereditary traits or even parental conditioning.
