The aim of my thesis is to investigate the probable similarities and differences of how female politicians are represented in a product of popular culture as opposed to reality, focusing on the issue of a female US president. As an introduction to this topic I am going to discuss the struggles of the female main character of the Netflix original show House of Cards and her experience in the field of politics, the power of popular culture to generate public discourse on controversial issues, and then elaborate on how a piece of fiction can relate to and reflect on Hillary Clinton losing the 2016 American presidential election as the first female nominee of a major party.
