Subject-verb agreement is an interesting phenomenon to be studied in relation to ambiguous constructions such as collective nouns. When they occupy the subject position in a sentence, collective nouns may select singular or plural verbs without obeying the general subject-verb agreement patterns: this variation occurs because nouns belonging to this specific class can be interpreted either as singular or plural entities. The present study is aimed at investigating collective nouns and what motivates their subject-verb agreement patterns while constructing a comparative overview of English and Arabic morphosyntactic features.
