Depression as a disease as we know of today has severely impacted the life of individuals around the world where awareness has emphasized the seriousness of Depression as a diseases and effective treatment has decreased it devastating effect it has on an individual’s life, but there was a time where depression wasn’t even considered as disease where in the 20th century psychiatrists coined the term “melancholy” as a substitute for depression where melancholy which was a feeling of sadness without any obvious cause was considered as a distinct quality of mood, in the late 20th century this term was later replaced by depression and then was characterized as a disease in the later years through effective awareness, but even though people in west considered depression as disease and a serious illness in the West, Eastern societies still don’t consider depression as a serious disease where in certain societies it’s not even considered as a disease one that makes us feel that we are still in the 20th century as half of the world has moved on to the 21st century and the other half still stuck in the 20th
