A munka első lépéseként az összegyűjtött névanyagból történeti-etimológiai szótárt készítettem, amely doktori értekezésem alapját jelenti. Az értekezésben a történeti-etimológiai tekintetben feltárt nevek név- és nyelvrendszertani kapcsolatának feltárására törekedtem.

Dolgozatom hat nagyobb egységből áll. Az első fejezetben Bihar vármegye településtörténetét vázolom fel áttekintve az idegen népesség helyzetét is. A második részben a Kárpát-medence névkontinuitásának kérdéséről szólok, a harmadik egység pedig a névtudomány kutatástörténeti vázlatát rajzolja meg. Mivel a korai névanyag vizsgálata nagyban hozzájárulhat a magyar hang- és nyelvjárástörténetről alkotott kép kiteljesítéséhez, a következő nagy fejezetben a névanyag ilyen irányú elemzését végeztem el: e helyütt azonban nem a korszak általános hangtörténetét adom, hanem az adott névanyagban megfigyelhető jellemzőket veszem vizsgálat alá. A településnevek névrendszertani vizsgálatát az ötödik és hatodik fejezet tartalmazza: a leíró elemzést követi a keletkezéstörténeti vizsgálat. A disszertációhoz több térkép is tartozik: egy összegző térképen minden lokalizálható településnevet bemutatok, ám emellett a megye egyes névtípusait tartalmazó térképeket is közlök. E térképek az egyes névtípusok területi sajátosságait, arányait is jól mutatják.

As a first step, I prepared a historical-etymological dictionary based on the collected onomastic corpus and this is the foundation of my doctoral dissertation. In my thesis, I wished to explore the onomatosystematical and grammatical relations of the names already explored in historical-etymological respects.

My dissertation consists of six larger units. In the first chapter, I outline the settlement history of Bihar comitat, including the situation of the foreign population, too. In the second chapter, I am concerned with the onomastic continuity of the Carpathian basin and, in the third one, I provide a sketch on the research history of onomastics. Since the examination of the early onomastic material may help a lot in completing the picture about the phonetic and dialectal history of Hungarian, in the next chapter I analyse the onomastic corpus from such aspect. But here I do not outline the general phonetic history of the era but my examination focuses on those characteristics that are observable in the given corpus. The onomatosystematical examination of settlement names is presented in the fifth and sixth chapters and the descriptive analysis is followed by an examination concerning the history of name formation. The dissertation includes some maps, too; there is a summarizing one with all settlement names that can be localized but I also publish maps that present the name types of the comitat. These maps well show the territorial characteristics and the rates of each name type.
