This thesis attempts to prove that Steinbeck’s work is an optimistic novel despite its pessimistic subject chosen by the author to highlight the illusion of the American Dream. The main aim is to show that unlike Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby, Steinbeck reflects optimism instead of depression and pessimism in his famous migrant story. The introductory part deals with the historical and economic background of the 1930s when the story takes place, but the literary background is also discussed. The concept of the American Dream provokes many questions thus it is essential to study the different interpretations and its evolution. Then, the thesis examines elements of the novel referring to the undefeated hope and hidden optimism. Steinbeck redefined the American Dream according to the modified circumstances and his preferable human values are demostrated through the main characters and their life. Additionally, some symbols are analysed in order to show their significance in presenting the writer’s opinion about life. At last, in my thesis I would like to give high importance to the last chapter of the novel which reveals the essence of Steinbeck’s message.
