The Beneficial Effects of Audio-Visual Media on Second Language Acquisition
Absztrakt
This present study is about incidental language acquisition with the help of the audio-visual media. It examines the facilitating effects of playing video games, watching videos, movies and series in the target language regarding language acquisition. In addition, this study deals with the positive effects of audio-visual media, listed above, on further learning of the target language. This way, it makes a difference between language acquisition and language learning as being incidental and intentional. (Krashen, 1981) Another aim is to introduce how affective factors such as motivation, attitude and language anxiety influence the second language acquisition process and along with this the positive impact of audio-visual media on these factors. The paper will also demonstrate the improvement of receptive and productive skills by examining a 7 year-old student’s four skills in a case study who has acquired English language with the help of audio-visual media. The results of the research prove that playing video games as well as watching videos, movies and series in the target language result in an impressively effective language acquisition. Furthermore, by developing the four skills, audio-visual materials help in further intentional language learning, as well.
