The acronym CALL may not be familiar to the reader. Computer-Assisted Language Learning, the name which the acronym stands for, is often used by teachers and students to refer to the use of computers as part of a language learning course. The concept of CALL is relatively new in linguistics; however, there are several definitions for it. The official webpage of CALICO wrote about it as “a relatively new and rapidly evolving academic field that explores the role of information and communication technologies in language learning and teaching” (Scholarship in CALL – CALICO). In other words it is “the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning” (Levy 1). Or according to another definition “any process in which a learner uses a computer and, as a result, improves his or her language” (Beatty 7). With the help of these quotations we can draw the conclusion that CALL was established as an academic field which deals with language learning and teaching. In order to help language learners, researchers create different programs which make language teaching possible via the computer. The need for computers in language teaching and learning grows rapidly because they can be used both in classroom environment and at home.hu_HU
