This study evaluates the economic feasibility and challenges of integrating agrivoltaic systems (AVS) with apple orchards in Hungary. The research focuses on assessing the potential for enhanced profitability and sustainability of apple production under solar energy integration. Initially, the scope considered AVS across various crops and land uses, but literature review and preliminary analysis highlighted apple orchards as particularly suitable due to their shading tolerance and economic significance. The final research emphasizes a theoretical evaluation of economic feasibility tailored to Hungary’s climatic and market conditions. The study compares AVS with both ground-mounted photovoltaic (GM-PV) systems and conventional apple farming to evaluate relative economic performance and the trade-offs between energy production and crop yields. Key variables considered include electricity tariffs, apple productivity, shading effects, weather conditions, and market prices. Results indicate that AVS can provide competitive economic returns compared with GM-PV systems while maintaining agricultural output and can outperform conventional apple farming in total economic value under certain conditions. Limitations include data scarcity, short-term observation periods, and variability across geographic regions in Hungary. Future work will involve collecting long-term field data from operational agrivoltaic apple orchards, analysing farmer adoption decisions, and exploring technical and social adaptations to optimise system performance. Overall, the research provides actionable insights for investors and policymakers, highlighting AVS as a viable strategy for combining sustainable energy production with apple cultivation in Hungary.
