The aim of my research was to investigate my students’ vocabulary learning strategies, their frequency of use, the relationship of strategies with age, gender, motivation, proficiency level, their specialised subjects and the connection of my learners’ proficiency and using English in their free time for entertainment. For this reason they were asked to fill in 4 questionnaires about vocabulary learning strategies, about motivation, about dictionary use and about the presence of language use in their free time. The subjects were 86 students - 43 males and 43 females – from 5 language groups, from four years. They were 15 – 19 years old and they were specialised in either languages or informatics and economics. The results of their questionnaires were compared and analysed. It was found that their strategy use is in positive correlation with their proficiency level and motivation. Moreover, females reported the use of more strategies more frequently than males, and the same was true for those who are specialised in languages.hu_HU
