Analyzing the Sustainability of the Malaysian Palm Oil Industry through the Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs): A Comprehensive Assessment and Strategic Outlook

This thesis aims to evaluate the sustainability of the palm oil industry in Malaysia by taking the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the main framework. The selection of the related SDGs to the palm oil industry was done with input from the literature review and information from the interview sessions. The identification of the selected SDGs was further evaluated with materiality matters assessment to answer the perspective given to sustainable palm oil. The SWOT and TOWS matrix analyses were conducted to investigate barriers and challenges revolving around this industry. Lastly, the Problem Tree and Solution Tree analyses were used to propose some recommendations to improve the sustainability of this industry. The author has concluded that there are four main perspectives concerning sustainable palm oil which are economic, environmental, social, and governance, and identified 11 out of 17 SDGs and 15 material matters that were impacted by this industry.
