Articaine was first introduced under the name carticaine in Germany in 1976. Since then it has been widely used in Europe, United States and Canada. It has properties similar to lidocaine, but also has some specific features, that make it superior to the other local anesthetics. Unique amide structure, rapid diffusion through the neuronal membranes and the enhanced tissue penetration makes it a very attractive solution for general dentists as daily use local anesthetic. It has been proven that it can be safely used with great effectiveness for both: pain management and preventive procedures. The purpose of this article is to present brief characteristic of the pharmacology of articaine as a local anaesthetic agent used in the dentistry. This review also analyses some available reports and articles which describe structure, physiochemical properties, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetic, efficacy, possible side effects and finally evaluate a superior effectiveness of articaine in comparison to other local anesthetics.hu_HU
