Teaching and Learning English Vocabulary with Technology
Absztrakt
In my thesis I would like to discuss the impact of technology on English language teaching with vocabulary teaching in focus. In the first part, I will present some details about the theories of vocabulary knowledge. Schmitt’s and Nation’s studies are of great significance in this regard. The questions of ’What does knowing a word involve?’ and ’How are the words built into our mental lexicon?’ will be discussed. I will describe the theoretical aspects of learning vocabulary, including vocabulary strategies. Then, I will give an account of how technology can complement the traditional methods and how students can enhance their effectiveness. The third and fourth parts are dedicated to a small-scale study, which was conducted in a secondary school in Hungary during February and March 2020. Teachers and their students were asked about their opinions towards adopting technology in language education. The results showed that both students and teachers hold positive views towards learning and teaching with technology, respectively. However, the lack of time and the lack of self-confidence in using technology were identified as major barriers which preventing many teachers from integrating ICT tools in their teaching.
