Mrs. Dalloway is a collection of subjective experiences and memories of its main characters over a single day. Woolf breaks the former narrative style to express the feelings and thoughts of the characters by the means of stream-of-consciousness The story runs in more strings which are units but these units are connected to each other. The novel gives a very deep psychoanalitic views of the characters. Woolf demonstrates the deep impact of the circumstances and the ideas where the characters live. Gender, society and class predestinate the behaviour and the destiny of the people. Most the criticism focuses on analyzing Woolf's critique of woman's social status in early British 20th century society. English social standards require from all of the members of the society to be fit in. Most of the characters pretend themselves to avoid condemnation. This behaviour lead to frustration and tension, but they have to repress all of these feelings.
