Absztrakt

The present study was created to investigate the dictionary use habits of undergraduate BA EFL students and give an overall view of their major dictionary ownership and preference. The short overview of the relevant literature highlights the different dictionary use skills which are necessary to the appropriate usage and emphasizes their importance in dictionary use as well as in students’ training. Considering the wide range of forms and types of available dictionaries, a short explanation on the differences is given with special attention to the advantages and disadvantages of monolingual vs. bilingual and printed dictionaries vs. electronic ones. The research is based on a questionnaire, which have been filled by 90 EFL undergraduates. The findings suggest that all students own dictionaries, which are in most cases printed bilingual pieces. The research also proves that apart from a small number of students, the majority have never been trained on dictionary use. However, students are very self-confident about their skills and do not think that they would have problem with those. They use dictionaries mainly for translation and writing purposes and when they look up a word they are interested in the meaning and spelling of that.
