ABSTRACT:

Contraceptives, in general are methods designed to prevent unwanted pregnancy from occurring. They could be hormonal/nonhormonal/barrier methods/devices etc. They have therapeutic functions such as treating menstrual and female reproductive disorders and can be used in preventing the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. In this thesis, I will go through the various forms of contraceptives, be it barrier methods, pills, patches etc., along with their advantages, disadvantages and efficacy. This paper will also include the materials, hormones they are made up of, how to use them, the duration of which they are prescribed to be used and any contraindications to the selected method. Some contraceptives are not only used for the prevention of conception but also have therapeutic and diagnostic purposes and these will be included.

AIM: The aim of this thesis will be to highlight the popular forms of contraceptives for both men and women, stating their advantages, disadvantages and efficacy. The reason for doing this is to provide a comprehensive resource for mostly women, giving them an avenue to understand each option which will further enable them to make choices that are fitting to them and their lifestyle.
