Emily Brontë, the individualistic daughter of an Anglican curate of a lonely parsonage on the edge of the bleak North-Yorkshire Moors, wrote one of the most original works in the English language, Wuthering Heights. Throughout the novel considerable attention is paid to details, including the descriptions of the locations, landscape, and weather. Natural phenomena and human passion always interact. The changes of weather symbolizing emotions, and the setting of the moors, are able to give the reader an insight into the personal feelings of the characters. The way how a setting is described is usually a tool to show that the story takes place within the characters themselves while the setting and the weather mimic the feelings of the individuals and help in grasping the complexity of the characters. In my thesis I will illustrate how the effects of natural phenomena and the changes of weather relate to human character and behaviour. Furthermore, I am going to analyse what meanings the moorland carries for the different characters of the novel.
