Schizophrenia, as probably the most well defined syndrome that can lead to psychosis, affects about 1% of the population. It’s a stigmatising diagnosis that can be difficult to live with, partly because the difficult pathology of the disorder may make it hard to find the perfect treatment option. There are various antipsychotic medications available on the market and the range of them keeps expanding. The original goal of these drugs (classical and atypical antipsychotics) was to intervene in the dopaminergic system, creating a new balance of neurotransmitter levels and function in the central nervous system. Unfortunately, adverse effects often appear as dark cloud on the sunny sky of successful therapy. Since Chlorpromazine appeared in the everyday practice, numerous new drugs have been developed, searching for perfection hasn’t stopped. In my thesis, after a short introduction of psychosis, schizophrenia, and the classical and atypical antipsychotics, I will provide a brief summary of some new, fascinating developments, some up to date options in the field of antipsychotic therapy, necessarily, without claiming to “paint the full picture” of the topic.
