Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic disease characterized by recurrent pruritic inflammatory lesions on the skin usually starting from childhood. Although the exact cause of AD is not known, it is thought to be a combination of multiple factors such as immune system dysregulation, defects in skin barrier function, exposure to certain environmental and infectious agents and genetic predisposition. The diagnosis is based on specific clinical manifestations and criteria. Currently, there is a wide spectrum of substances used in the treatment of atopic dermatitis ranging from moisturizers to systemic corticosteroids in severe recalcitrant cases. Unfortunately, none of them provide a permanent cure to this common chronic disease. Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is being studied as a potentially curative approach to AD. It is a desensitizing therapy that focuses on the induction of immune tolerance to specific allergens to prevent the future occurrence of allergic diseases. Its use in allergic rhinitis and asthma is more widely recognized, however, it is still controversial in atopic dermatitis due to the multiple factors that play a pathogenic role in this disease.hu_HU
