Postoperative pain, though predictable and expected by patients before surgery can have adverse and even debilitating effects on the quality of life of the patient. Considering the ongoing opioid crisis experienced countries around the world and the fact that a number of the sufferers are postsurgical patients struggling due to poor postsurgical pain management, there is need to look into other pain management options available. Multi-modal and inter-disciplinary options will optimize results, empower patients with options, prevent chronic postsurgical pain and manage pain if it becomes chronic. Patient education and proper consideration of the postsurgical social realities of the patient while planning the postsurgical pain management would have a better outcome with postsurgical pain management. Understanding the available postsurgical treatments, pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical, shines light to the need for more advancement in postoperative care especially regarding pain, and the need for proper outpatient care of the postsurgical patient.
