In my thesis I will present how African-American people were portrayed in American advertising. I start the overview at the very beginning: in the era of slavery when the foundations for black advertising were established. The chapters follow the history of advertising related to African-Americans. By this chronological order I want to present how the ads evolved and what were the different trends in advertisements with blacks. In my thesis I also try to present how stereotypes were created about blacks and how they changed during the decades. I also want to show that even if 150 years passed since the end of slavery we can still find degrading ads for colored people in the media. Chapter 2, 3 and 4 focuses on different kind of product groups. The second and the third chapter present food and household products. These were the most popular products in the 1800s that were advertised with blacks and they pictured blacks as happy and content slaves. The fourth chapter focuses on beauty and sport ads showing the latest popular trends about black advertising. In this chapter I present that black women are often pictured as animals, sexually overheated seducers or objectified women.
