Changes in the intestinal microbiome can be affected by an individual's state of health, stress, antibiotics, diet, and geographic location. Published data show that the microbiome affects colonic function and vice versa. However, the effects of the microbiome on small intestinal contractile activity are not well known. The small intestine does not have a large bacterial load like the colon. Thus, the bacteria themselves are not likely to have a direct effect on small intestinal function. However, metabolites of bacteria in the colon enter the circulation and sometimes reach relatively high concentrations. Thus, microbiome metabolites may affect intestinal function, including intestinal motility. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of bacterial metabolites on intestinal motility.
