The present thesis attempts to interpret the role of grammar in English lesson and shed light on the reasons why students think about grammar learning as a straitjacket. The aim of my thesis is twofold. On the one hand, I present the historical survey of grammar teaching via different language teaching methods and analyze the grammar teaching methods in Hungary affected by different approaches. On the other hand, I draw a conclusion from data of my research, done with primary school students, and analyze their grammar teaching method and their opinions about grammar teaching in class. The results will be analyzed according to the theoretical findings as well. The thesis was conceived of and realized in the hope of highlighting the major problems in Hungarian language teaching method.hu_HU
