The aim of the thesis is to shed light on the relationship between language and thought by attempting to discover whether the deep-rooted sexist assumptions of people manifest themselves in a type of written discourse, namely jokes. On the basis of other researchers’ findings, it is expected that people express their suppressed thoughts more freely in jokes, because of their light-hearted manner. Jokes in English provide an outstanding and abundant resource of research in this respect. They not only objectify women, or less frequently men, but people’s deep-rooted discrimination on the basis of sex could be expressed in a light-hearted manner, trying to avoid offending readers, however, not always successfully. Thus, the main goal of the present study is to find out to what extent sexist stereotypes are present in the language of jokes and what other forms are salient in this discourse type to discriminate women and emphasize male dominance. An additional aim is to discover how language contributes to further promoting inequality between the sexes.hu_HU
