Absztrakt

In my research, I examined the socioeconomic situation of the different racial groups present in the United States. My main focus was the status of African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians compared to the whites from 2008 until today. I was interested in whether the first president of African American descent, Barack Obama, influenced the discrimination rooted in the American society concerning job opportunities, unemployment, housing, and education. Since it has not been an accustomed phenomenon that the leader of the country comes from a minority group which is considered to be on of the most visible and oppressed one at the same time, it has already raised many complex issues at the time of his first election. Nevertheless, he has managed to bring down many obstacles and used a new kind of strategy to better the economy. He has embraced the tenet of "E pluribus unum" and balanced between race-neutral and race-conscious policies. All in all, he improved the socioeconomic situation of the different racial groups compared to their status during his first term. However, unfortunately, minority groups, especially African Americans and Hispanics are far behind the dominant culture as the statistics shows, whether in terms of financial matters or in possibilities in general in their everyday lives.
