Absztrakt

Coursebook evaluation has been pushed into the background for decades although it is one of the major features of successful English language teaching and learning. Every practising teacher knows that the first step of establishing a prosperous teaching/learning situation is to choose the most suitable course material that meets both the learners and the teacher’s needs. After the introductory part, the first chapter of the dissertation investigates ELT literature in connection with the chosen topic. The dissertation makes an attempt to clarify the difference between how we can determine what a syllabus and a coursebook is, and it compares recognized experts’ evaluation approaches. The last chapter of the literature review contains the theoretical comparison of two well-known coursebooks, New Headway Elementary and Channel your English Elementary. The third chapter of the dissertation presents a research that was carried out among secondary school teachers to collect data in connection with the studied topic. The research was aided by two questionnaires; every participant was asked to fill in both of them. In the fourth chapter the collected data were studied and interpreted. And in the last part of the research a conclusion is drawn ‘in the light of’ the given results.
