The decades of The Troubles have inspired a great number of Northern Irish writers throughout the second half of 20th century and the 21st century as well. The Troubles was an ethno-nationalist conflict that lasted from the 1960’s to 1998, the year of the Good Friday Agreement that was supposed to bring peace. “The cessation of violence with the IRA’s fragile cease fire in 1994 and the Belfast Agreement of 1998 does not appear to have diminished interest in traumatic aspects of modern Irish history among contemporary Irish novelists” (Garratt 114). Bernard MacLaverty is one of these authors because in his novels the depiction of The Troubles and its’ long-lasting traumatic impact on the Northern-Irish society is prevalent, even after 1998. In my thesis I will concentrate on Lamb and Cal, both set in the 70’s, and Midwinter Break which is MacLaverty’s most recent novel, published in 2017. All three novels mirror the period when they were written, heavily influenced by the decades of ongoing violence in Northern Ireland, and its aftermath.
