Absztrakt

A translator has a very crucial role in the translation of books that are part of the world of fiction. My thesis is about the three most common challenges translators face during the translation of the Harry Potter books. In the first chapter, I introduced five translation procedures that can be applied to translating the book series. Transfer, substitution, semantic translation, modification and compensation are the most important procedures that translators use in the process of translation. In the second chapter, I discussed the translation of proper names: transparent and non-transparent personal names, animal names and geographical names and provided their Hungarian equivalents. In the third chapter, I examined why additional words related to the world of Harry Potter are difficult to find a Hungarian equivalent for. Lastly, I introduced the accent of Rubeus Hagrid, whose dialect was sadly ignored during the translation. The translator of the Hungarian book series, Tamás Boldizsár Tóth solved these difficulties well, however, he did not translate the dialect of Rubeus Hagrid, therefore, not maintaining compensation in the story anymore.
