The Bridge of San Luis Rey is a very controversial book in the way that one of the author’s main aims in it is to prove that pure love as such does exist. Yet, though it would be too strong to state that the opposite is demonstrated, still we cannot deny the fact that he cannot show it. Love inevitably involves the wish for the possession of the other, the wish for becoming a full person in the other. At the same time love also has attributes of sacrifice, however these feelings are mixed so much that it is really difficult to analyse them in a rational way.
