dc.description.abstractIn my thesis, I argue that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg initiated substantial progress in the rights of American women. From a young age, she had to fight to refute gender stereotypes and to be taken seriously by colleges, law firms, and even the Supreme Court, but her egalitarian attitude and dedication to women’s cause—which were both reinforced by her family and her life experiences—helped her rise above and continue her mission. After she graduated, Ginsburg became a litigator and started working with cases that discriminated on the basis of sex to convince the all-male Supreme Court that gender discrimination was real and hurt men too. In 1993, she was appointed to the Supreme Court as the second female associate justice and she continued advancing women’s rights by contributing to landmark decisions, such as United Sates v. Virginia. Her powerful dissenting opinions were also influential; they reached the public to such an extent that Ginsburg became a celebrity. Ruth Bader Ginsburg used her platform to empower young women, thus further supporting their cause.hu_HU
