To better understand the factors affecting wound healing, we investigated the morphology of therapy-responder and therapy-non-responder chronic wounds and the role of two important biomolecules, TGFβ1 (transforming growth factor β1) and the VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor). We obtained tissue samples from venous ulcers, and from healthy skins as controls. Histological and immunohistological examinations were carried out. Clear morphological differences can be detected during histological analysis of the therapy responder, non-responder ulcer’s edge and the control skin. The immunohistological staining for TGFβ1 showed more intensive positive reactions in the responder group, and milder reaction in the non-responders. Staining for VEGF showed milder differences between the groups.
