The aim of this Thesis is to theorize the roles of repression and subsequent depression, and how those two factors are presented in the 1989 film, Dead Poets Society. Furthermore, I argue that not only do the aspects of repression and depression develop the plot of the film, but that a literary analysis of the film itself, while using the characters as examples, serves as a commentary on real-world connections. Analyzing the “Carpe Diem” genre of literature, and further analyzing real-world applications of that particular genre of poetry.
